A picturesque village of 8,967 (2000) that's known for its graceful weeping willow trees and natural ponds, wetlands and beautiful foliage, Willowbrook is located 18 miles southwest of Chicago's Loop in DuPage County. The Stevenson Expressway and Tri-State Tollway are close by. Commuters can board a Metra train at the nearby Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills stations; the trip into downtown Chicago takes around 45 minutes.
Willowbrook contains many different types of housing at a variety of prices. Single-family homes are both older and newer, and range from ranch-style homes, bungalows, split-levels and Victorians to colonial estate houses; many of the larger homes are situated on wooded lots and feature circular driveways, whirlpool baths, skylights and scenic views. Prices for larger properties range from the mid-$400,000s to $1 million dollars or more. In August, 2006, a three-bedroom, two and one-half-bath single-family home was listed for $435,000; a five-bedroom, four-bath single-family residence was selling for $999,500. Condominiums and townhomes are also available, and range in price from $100,000 to the mid-$200,000s.
The Willowbrook Parks and Recreation Department maintains 10 parks totaling 55 acres. Eight of these parks come with playgrounds and picnic tables. The largest park, the Tony and Florence Borse Memorial Community Park, contains ballfields, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground, and picnic areas. The Recreation Department also offers year-round programs for pre-schoolers through senior citizens. Fitness and swimming enthusiasts can get some exercise at the Willowbrook Athletic Club, and at two facilities in neighboring Burr Ridge: the Lifetime Fitness Center and the Five Seasons Country Club. All three facilities provide exercise equipment, fitness and sports classes and regulation-size swimming pools.
To do their shopping, villagers can head out to seven shopping centers located along Kingery Highway. In their spare time, they can also visit nearby Brookfield Zoo or the Morton Arboretum in Lisle. Indian Prairie Public Library on Plainfield Road in nearby Darien provides service for Willowbrook residents.
