West Town Real Estate

A fairly large community that's situated just northwest of Chicago's Loop, the West Town neighborhood is bounded by Chicago Avenue on the north, the Eisenhower Expressway on the south, Halsted Street on the east, and California Avenue on the west. According to some sources, West Town is comprised of a group of smaller Chicago neighborhoods that include East Village, Noble Square and Ukranian Village. Its population of over 87,000 is a diverse mix of different cultures.

Because of its excellent location, West Town is a rapidly developing area. Commuters have easy access to the Eisenhower Expressway, and the Kennedy Expressway is close by. The neighborhoods are quickly being transformed into shopping and dining meccas complete with new shops, restaurants and other upscale offerings. Apparel stores such as Alcala's Western Wear and Envy Boutique have opened on Chicago Avenue; home furnishings stores Aspen Kitchen and Bath and Black Walnut Gallery are located on Division Street, and fashionable eateries and bars in the neighborhood include High Dive on Chicago Avenue, Enoteca Roma Winebar and Bruschetteria on Division Street and Mas restaurant and Green Zebra restaurant, both on Chicago Avenue.

In addition to the various shops and restaurants that dot the neighborhood, there are also a number of banks, insurance agencies, bakeries, churches, parks, schools, and Realtors' offices that are located in West Town. Cultural venues include the Chicago Dramatists's Workshop on Chicago Avenue, the Ukranian Institute of Modern Art, also on Chicago Avenue, the Chopin Theatre on Division Street, and the Suzuki Orff School for Young Musicians on Chicago Avenue.

The CTA's Blue Line elevated train provides reliable transportation, as do a number of Metra trains. There are also more than one-half dozen CTA buses that provide transportation to area residents.

In terms of housing, West Town consists of two and three-flats, renovated apartments and single-family homes, as well as some new brick and limestone constructions. The median price of a single-family home in 2000 was $365,000; the median price of a single-family attached residence that same year was $275,000.
