West Rogers Park Neighborhood Real Estate

A community that's known for its diversity and rich blend of cultures, the Chicago neighborhood of West Rogers Park (often referred to as West Ridge or Nortown), is bordered by Kedzie Avenue, Howard Street, Ridge Avenue, and Peterson Avenue. One of the most ethnically and religiously diverse neighborhoods in Chicago, West Rogers Park features a variety of bungalows, Georgian-style homes, Victorians, and ranch homes.

Though most residents reside in single-family homes, there are a few large apartment complexes, and many owner-occupied two and three-flats in the area. In August, 2006, a two-bedroom, two-bath single-family home on West Farwell Avenue was listed for $275,000; a three-bedroom, 2.5-bath single-family residence on North Whipple was selling for $379,900; and a six-bedroom, two-bath single-family home on North Claremont Avenue was listed for $535,000. The population of West Rogers Park is 73,199 (2000), and it encompasses 3.53 square miles.

The heart of West Rogers Park is bustling Devon Avenue, which cuts through the neighborhood. The street is filled with small shops and local institutions representing a broad mix of cultures: everything from meat markets and delis to bookstores and religious institutions. Here, you can find curry, coconut cookies and beautifully decorated saris for sale on one block of the street, and on another section of Devon Avenue, discover a wealth of religious books and kosher meats. There is a potpourri of cuisines: everything from Chinese and Indian cuisines to Pakistani and kosher Jewish offerings.

Congregation Bnei Ruven on North Whipple Street is a landmark institution in the West Rogers neighborhood. It has served the Jewish Orthodox community since 1895, when it was first founded in the historic Maxwell Street area. Its distinctive building features a cylindrical shape that's suggestive of a Torah scroll. Today it continues to serve the Chicago Jewish community with a variety of classes, guest speakers and daily religious services.
