St. Charles Real Estate

Located 40 miles west of downtown Chicago in Kane County, and covering an area of 15.9 square miles, the town of St. Charles boasts excellent schools, historically significant architecture, a variety of recreational activities, and beautiful parks. The Northwest and East-West Tollways are nearby. To travel to downtown Chicago, residents can catch a train in nearby Geneva; the trip takes about one hour. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the population of St. Charles is 27,896.

In recent years, more than $40 million dollars has been spent on refurbishing the village's downtown area. The town was one of five winners of the 2000 Great American Main Street Awards given by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A residential and retail complex fills the downtown property that was once occupied by the Piano Factory Mall. Single-family subdivisions include Majestic Oaks, a collection of custom and semi-custom homes and Renaux Manor on the town's west side. An historic district contains more than 300 buildings downtown and in older residential neighborhoods, from Fifth Street on the west side of the Fox River to Sixth Avenue on the east. Townhomes and condominiums are also available. The median price of a single-family home is $325,000 (2004).

Villagers can visit the town's Century Corners section of Victorian homes that sell antiques and other items. Across the Fox River sits Old St. Charles, the village's historic district; that section of town features a European-style market and a number of antique shops. St. Charles is also the home of the popular Kane County Flea Market, where more than 1,500 dealers sell thousands of items each month. The Charlestown Mall also offers other shopping opportunities.

St. Charles esidents have a number of leisure activities they can pursue. They can play miniature golf at Heartland Miniature Golf on East Main Street, at Campton Hills Park Disc Golf Course, at Charlestowne Mall, and at Pheasant Run Resort Golf Course. In their spare time, villagers can also visit the St. Charles History Museum, which contains Civil War artifacts, and relax in any number of parks in town. These include Ferson Creek Park, which is situated along the Fox River and provides picnic sites, a playground, fishing and a canoe launch; Mount St. Mary Park, which contains bike trails, fishing, picnic areas and tennis courts; and Pottawatomie Park, which features a community center, swimming pools, a golf course, paddle wheel riverboat cruises, lighted tennis courts, and other attractions.
