Chicago's South Shore Real Estate

Located on Chicago's scenic lakefront, and just southwest of the University of Chicago and Museum of Science and Industry, the South Shore neighborhood features beautiful beaches and green space, golf courses, a rich tradition of support for the arts, and close proximity to downtown Chicago.. The boundaries of the South Shore community are Marquette, Stoney Island Avenue, 79th Street, and Lake Michigan. The population of South Shore is 61,556 (2000).

The focus of the South Shore neighborhood is the historic South Shore Cultural Center, which was originally a country club and a lakefront retreat for Chicago's wealthiest and most prominent families. The grounds included a stable and a beach, and tennis, horseback riding and skeet shooting were enjoyed by such well-known figures as Jean Harlow, Will Rogers and Amelia Earhardt. In 1974, the South Shore Cultural Center held its last members-only event; today the Chicago Park District owns the property. It has been restored to its original design and is now open to the public. In 1975, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it became a Chicago landmark in 2004. The South Shore Cultural Center now offers a wide array of cultural arts programming and performances for people of all ages.

In their spare time, residents can attend a number of South Shore activities including jazz festivals and the nationally recognized "Real Men Cook" barbecue event. The Creative Arts Foundation on South Chicago Avenue offers another leisure-time opportunity for area residents. The Foundation has produced over 180 mainstage productions of new works by African-American writers, and has been given over 120 awards from various local and national groups in recognition of its contribution to the arts.

The South Shore neighborhood boasts a wealth of beautiful architectural styles including Prairie-style, Romanesque, Tudor, Gothic, Queen Ann, Victorian, Classic, and modern-style architecture. There are spacious, older mansions that dot the neighborhood, as well as newer condominiums and apartment buildings. The median price of a single-family home is $165,000.
