South of downtown Chicago sits the South Loop neighborhood, which is bounded by Lake Michigan, the Chicago River, Cermak Road and Congress Parkway. Residents like living there because of the proximity to the lake and their downtown jobs, and to various Chicago institutions such as the Art Institute of Chicago, Navy Pier, and the landmark Auditorium Theatre.
A number of educational institutions such as Roosevelt University, Columbia College, DePaul University, and the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies on South Michigan Avenue are also close by. In addition, area residents can go and listen to the renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra play at Symphony Center, learn about the planets at the Adler Planetarium, see some dinosaurs at the Field Museum of Natural History, witness the cascading waters of Buckingham Fountain, and go watch the Chicago Bears football team play at Soldier Field. All of these attractions are minutes away from the South Loop neighborhood.
The neighborhood itself has flourished during the past 20 years with the addition of an eclectic mix of upscale restaurants, chic boutiques, galleries, and book and antique stores. Within the boundaries of the South Loop community sits the Printer's Row neighborhood, part of which has been designated an official historic landmark district. Once the home of the city's printing establishments, the community underwent a dramatic transformation in the 1980s, attracting restaurateurs, quaint shops and loft and condominium buildings to the area. The neighborhood's Printer's Row Book Fair in June is a popular event that attracts thousands of book lovers to the area each year.
In terms of housing, the Soup Loop neighborhood has numerous housing choices including condominiums, and lofts made from former warehouses, printing plants and other historic buildings. In August, 2006, the newly-constructed Printers Corner condominium building at Polk and Wells Streets was listing one-to-three-bedroom condominium units at prices ranging from the $270,000s to the $800,000s. The units feature one to three baths and a host of luxury amenities. Deeded parking spaces were starting at $36,000.
