Schaumburg Real Estate

Home of the massive Woodfield Shopping Center, one of the largest enclosed shopping malls in the United States, the village of Schaumburg attracts newcomers because of its excellent shopping opportunities, abundant housing, nonexistent property taxes, and good schools. It's also a popular location for hundreds of large, mid-sized and smaller companies. The population of Schaumburg is approximately 75,000.

Schaumburg is located 29 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and close to the Northwest Tollway and the Eisenhower Expressway. O'Hare International Airport is about 20 minutes away. Nearby communities include Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, and Arlington Heights. To reach downtown Chicago, commuters can board a train in Palatine, Arlington Heights or Schaumburg; the trip takes 50 minutes (40 minutes express).

In their leisure time, residents have a number of activities from which to choose. The Schaumburg Park District oversees a number of programs and facilities including 14 outdoor skating rinks; five aquatic facilities including The Waterworks, an indoor water park; three outdoor pools; three fitness and recreation centers; a golf course; and Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary, which consists of 135 acres of fields, marshes, streams, and handicapped-accessible trails and a museum. Residents can also attend the popular Autumn Harvest Festival, which features hands-on demonstrations of the pioneer era and 1880s farm life.

In addition to Woodfield Mall, residents can shop at the Park Plaza Shopping Center at One Schaumburg Place and at a number of shopping centers at the intersection of Golf, Roselle and Higgins Roads. They can also visit the Streets of Woodfield, which features a 20-screen movie theater, a virtual reality arcade, themed restaurants, and a variety of large stores and smaller shops. Schaumburg is one of only two towns in Illinois (the other is in Bolingbrook) that contains the popular IKEA home furnishings store.

Much of the housing in Schaumburg was built after 1970 and consists of split-level homes, ranches and other types of housing. In recent years, several new townhouse developments have been built. Condominiums and apartment rentals are also available in Schaumburg. The median price of a single-family home is $248,110 (2006).
