Sauganash Real Estate

The community of Sauganash on Chicago's far northwest side is bounded by Bryn Mawr Avenue, Devon Avenue, the Metra Union Pacific Railroad, and Cicero Avenue. The Kennedy Expressway is just west of the area, and the Edens Expressway is located at the intersection of Cicero and Peterson Avenues. Metra's Milwaukee Road line trains provide convenient transportation, and CTA buses run on several major streets. Sauganash is noted for its excellent transportation, broad collection of housing styles and its many recreational opportunities.

The neighborhood and Sauguanash Park as well got its name from a Potawatomi Indian chief. Sauganash was born in 1780, educated by Jesuit priests, became a Chicago resident in 1820, then was elected a justice of the peace six years later. In 1830, the federal government gave him a 1,200-acre reservation along the North Branch of the Chicago River, which he later sold to farmers. Eventually the area was subdivided into homes, and in 1926, residents of the prestigious new Sauganash development requested that recreational facilities be established for their community. The Sauguanash Park District acquired nearly four acres of property, and recreational amenities such as tennis and horseshoe courts and an English-style fieldhouse with a 300-seat auditorium were constructed.

Today, the Chicago Park District owns Sauganash Park, and additional facilities have been added. Recreational amenities include a gymnasium, a fitness center, an assembly hall with a stage, two softball fields, two basketball courts, four tennis courts, and a playground. Area youth can play a variety of sports including volleyball, basketball, flag football, floor hockey, and more, and pre-schoolers have their own set of programs including tiny tot tumbling, story telling and playschool. Other classes for young children include tiny tot theatre, tap and ballet; older children can take hit hop, tap and ballet classes. For adults, there are classes in piano, band and guitar.

Though there are a number of condominiums and multi-unit buildings in the neighborhood, Sauganash has one of the broadest varieties of single-family home styles in the city. Ranch houses from the 1950s dominate, but the community also has its share of Cape Cods, Georgians, bungalows Tudor-style, and older frame homes. Newer ranch homes have been built in recent years. In 2005, the median price of condominiums and townhomes was $390,000; the median price of a single-family home was $704,900.
