Riverdale Real Estate

The Cook County community of Riverdale is located 23 miles from downtown Chicago and 16 miles from Midway Airport. The south suburban village covers an area of 3.6 square miles, and its population is 14,588 (2005). Home-town resident Elizabeth (Betty) Robinson brought fame to Riverdale as a gold medal champion in both the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Riverdale shares its borders with Chicago to the northeast, Dolton to the east and south, Harvey to the southwest, Dixmoor and the forest preserves to the west, and Calumet Park to the northwest. Its main attraction is its reasonably-priced single-family housing, which includes bungalow-style homes, raised ranches, and Cape Cod and Georgian-style residences. In 2006, the median price of a single-family home was $124,500. During August, 2006, a two-bedroom, one-bath home was listed for $105,000, a three-bedroom, 1.1-bath home was selling for $149,900, and a three-bedroom, three-bath home was listed for $245,000.

The Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94), Tri-State Tollway(I-294), and I-57 are just minutes away, and the drive into downtown Chicago takes approximately 35 minutes. Metra train service is available from the village's Ivanhoe and Riverdale stations, and PACE bus service runs along Halsted Street and Indiana Avenues. CTA trains operate from a station at 95th Street; a non-express ride into downtown Chicago takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Elementary school students attend District 133 or 144. High school students attend Thornton Township High School in District 205; teachers at Thornton High School average 20.2 years of experience.

Riverdale residents can take advantage of the many activities offered by the Riverdale and Ivanhoe Park District including arts and crafts classes and athletic programs. Parks, basketball courts, forest preserves, and county golf courses offer children and adults additional recreational opportunities.

In 2003, the village of Riverdale was given the prestigious Governor's Hometown award at an annual luncheon in Springfield, Illinois. The award recognizes community improvement efforts, which depend upon the voluntary commitment of community residents and organizations.
