Palatine is a village with abundant recreational opportunities, a bustling downtown shopping district, and plentiful housing. It is a mix of residential, commercial, light industrial and office space, all surrounded by parks and open land, providing the town with a peaceful atmosphere and a solid tax base. The population of Palatine is 67,232 (2005).

The Cook County suburb is situated 26 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, 15 miles from O'Hare International Airport, and 31 miles away from Midway Airport. Palatine's housing stock boasts a variety of styles including ranches, colonial, split-level, Cape Cod, Victorian, and custom-built homes. There are also a number of condominiums and townhouses in the village. The median price of a single-family home is $199,200 (2000).

In their leisure time, residents can take advantage of many activities and facilities that are part of the Palatine Park District. These include numerous classes, as well as parks, stables, a golf course, trails, a senior center, and an historical museum. The Salt Creek Rural Park District also covers the southeast limits of Palatine; the Twin Lakes recreation area features a nine-hole executive golf course, a driving range, fishing, boating, and many other recreational activities. Nature lovers can visit the Crabtree Nature Center.

For shopping, villagers can head out to the downtown business district or to various shopping centers on Dundee Road, west of Rand Road. Woodfield Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the country, is a short distance away.

Community Consolidated School District 15 is the second largest elementary school district in Illinois. It serves a population of nearly 13,000 elementary and junior high school students from all or part of seven communities including Palatine. There are 20 schools within the district: 15 kindergarten through sixth grade schools, four junior highs (seventh and eighth grades), and one alternative school. Seven of the district's schools have been individually recognized with the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Schools award. One of the key goals established by the Board of Education is "world-class student achievement in communications skills reading, social skills, problem-solving skills, technology, literacy, life skills, and mathematics."

High school students attend William Fremd and Palatine High Schools, located in District 211, the largest high school district in Illinois, serving more than 215,000 students. They've both been nationally recognized by the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Secondary Schools Award Program, which rewards excellence in academic, athletic and other school programs.

William Rainey Harper College in Palatine is a two-year public community college that serves approximately 24,000 students from 23 northwest suburban communities. DePaul University and Roosevelt University - both four-year educational institutions- also offer classes in nearby communities.
