Orland Park Real Estate

The Cook County suburb of Orland Park is located 25 miles southwest of Chicago's Loop and 35 minutes away from Midway Airport. The village is one of the fastest growing in the Chicago metropolitan area. According to U.S. Census figures, the population in 2000 was 51,077; by 2005, it had increased to 57,000.

The price of single-family housing has also dramatically increased in recent years. In 2000, the median cost of a single-family home was $208,300; by 2006, it had increased to $295,000. Housing styles include Victorian and Queen Anne homes and a large number of upscale, custom-built residences located in newer subdivisions, some of which sell for more than $2 million dollars. Townhouses and condominiums are plentiful.

Orland Park's history began in 1879 when the Wabash, St. Louis and Pacific Railroad was extended through the northwest corner of Orland Township on its way to connecting Chicago and St. Louis. A train station was built at 143rd Street, and soon after, a small settlement of a few businesses and several hundred residents had flourished around the station. In 1892, the Village of Orland Park was incorporated.

The Old Orland Historic District is an important remnant of those earlier times. Located south of 143rd Street and west of LaGrange Road, the area features a collection of antique, specialty and boutique shops, as well as historic churches and houses.

Today, the residents of Orland Park have a large number of recreational opportunities from which to choose. They can spend a day swimming at the village's Centennial Park Aquatics Center on West Avenue, work out at the Village of Orland Park's Sportsplex facility on 159th Street, take advantage of the many forest preserves, parks, bicycle paths, horseback riding and area golf courses, or sign up for one of many programs, trips and classes offered by the Orland Park Recreation Department.

Villagers can also shop at a number of venues in town including the Orland Square Mall, the Brementowne Mall, Orland Park Plaza, Greatlands and Park Point Plaza. The downtown shopping district offers other shopping options, and is being refurbished to include a new Metra station, town square, condominiums, townhomes, a small park and plaza, ornamental streetscaping, and new retail stores.

Students can attend any number of excellent public and private primary and middle schools in the area. Many high school students attend Carl Sandburg High School on LaGrange Road.
