Northbrook Real Estate

A village that's known for its top-rated schools, excellent recreational facilities and convenient transportation, Northbrook sits 25 miles north of downtown Chicago in the heart of the North Shore. The Cook County suburb covers almost 13 square miles, and is located 17 miles from O'Hare International Airport and 33 miles from Midway Airport. The Edens and Tri-State Expressways are nearby, and commuters can board a Metra train in Northbrook for a 40-minute ride into downtown Chicago. Pace buses also provide transportation to Northbrook Court, the train station and the surrounding suburbs. The population of Northbrook is 33,435.

To do their shopping, residents can visit the Village Square shopping center or Northbrook Court, which contains numerous anchor stores such as Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Lord & Taylor, as well as movie theatres, restaurants and smaller specialty shops.

The village's housing stock contains many older homes that were constructed between the 1950s and 1970s, as well as newer, custom-built residences. Townhomes are also available, as are condominiums and apartment rental units. In August, 2006, a three-bedroom, two-bath single-family home was listed for $349,900; a four-bedroom, two and one-half-bath single-family residence was selling for $$499,900, and a five-bedroom, seven-bath single-family home was priced at $2,569,000.

From kindergarten through high school, Northbrook students consistently score above average on standardized tests including the Prairie State Achievement Examination, ACT and SAT.

Northbrook has a wealth of recreational activities and facilities in which villagers can participate. These include the spacious Meadowhill Aquatic Center pool complex, the state-of-the-art Sports Center ice arena and the Sportsman's Country Club championship golf course. The Northbrook Park District maintains over 500 acres of parks, facilities and playgrounds that house more than 1,300 leisure programs. Furthermore, the Northbrook Park District was cited by the Northern Illinois Realtors Association as one of the top reasons families move into the community.

Other recreational facilities include volleyball, soccer, baseball and football fields, jogging and walking trails, a Velodrome cycling track, indoor and outdoor ice skating facilities, picnic areas, sledding hills, and climbing walls. In their spare time, villagers can also attend live theater productions, a winter ice skating competition, a Daddy-Daughter dance, a Northbrook-on-Ice Show, summer Park Fest concerts, and more.
