The village of Monee is located in Will County, 32 miles south of downtown Chicago, and covers an area of 3.1 square miles. It is located midway between Chicago and Kankakee; nearby suburbs include University Park, Richton Park, Park Forest, and Matteson. According to 2005 statistics, the population of Monee is 4,629.
Monee residents have a large number of recreational activities from which to choose. They can sign up for a class with the Monee Parks and Recreation Department, and also visit other leisure-time facilities that are located in the area. Baseball and softball fields are located in Fireman's Park as well as at Monee Elementary School, and are maintained by the Monee Youth Baseball Organization. Summer baseball programs are available for children ages five through 16.
The Golf Vista Golf Course is a professionally designed course located in the Golf Vista Estates neighborhood. The 34-acre course is open to the public from April 1 to October 31.
In their spare time, residents can also visit the Peotone Library, located just a few miles south of Monee, and attend various family-oriented events that are sponsored by the village and/or local organizations. These include the annual Fall Faire featuring food, games and crafts; the Community Garage Sale that's sponsored by the Women's Club of Monee; a Halloween party that's held at Fireman's Park; and volleyball tournaments, an annual golf outing and a chili cook-off that are sponsored by the Monee Area Chamber of Commerce for member businesses and the community as well.
Younger students in kindergarten through fourth grade attend Monee Elementary School; they then go on to Crete-Monee Intermediate Center for fifth and sixth grade. They complete their elementary education (seventh and eighth grades) at Crete-Monee Middle School, then go on to attend Crete-Monee High School. There are also a number of parochial primary schools and high schools in the area. Governors State University in University Park provides a comprehensive four-year education; other nearby community and four-year colleges include St. Xavier (Tinley Park); Joliet Junior College and College of St. Francis (Joliet); Robert Morris College (Orland Park); Lewis University (Romeoville); and Trinity College in Palos Heights.
Housing prices range from moderate to expensive. In July, a three-bedroom, two-bath home on S. Linden Avenue was selling for $247,900, while a three-bedroom, three bath single-family residence on S. Willow Creek Lane was listed for $699,900.
