One of the 77 official neighborhoods of Chicago, Clearing is located on the southwest side of Chicago. It includes about half of Midway Airport, which was Chicago's first official airport, and for decades, was the busiest airport in the nation, and then the world. In recent years, a modern, new terminal and parking garage have been constructed, and the number of travelers has dramatically increased. The southern portion of Midway Airport is located in the Clearing neighborhood.
Clearing got its name in the late 1800s from the railroad term "clearing yard," a spot where incoming trains are broken down into individual cars and outgoing ones are assembled. It became a part of Chicago in 1915 because a growing population needed the services provided by the city of Chicago. Clearing is bounded by 65th Street to the south, 59th Street to the north, Harlem Avenue to the west, and Cicero Avenue to the east. It covers an area of 2.56 square miles, and has a population of 22,331 (2000).
The community has a fair number of businesses, restaurants and shopping in the area, in large part due to its proximity to Midway Airport. There is a very active community organization- a watchdog group called the Clearing Night Force that patrols the neighborhood to keep it safe and clean. For relaxation, Clearing residents can visit Hale Park, Lawler Park, Minuteman Park, and Wentworth Park.
Condominiums in Clearing range from $124,000 to $1,129,000. Townhomes throughout the neighborhood can be purchased beginning at about $79,000. Older brick bungalows are also available; those range from $99,000 to $140,000.
Chrysler Village is a tiny residential area in the Clearing neighborhood. It covers an area of 0.25 square miles and has 3,275 residents (2000). The Stevenson Expressway is nearby, and CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) buses run on many main streets. CTA Orange Line trains also provide service to the community.
