McHenry Real Estate

A town of about 24,493 (2004), McHenry boasts small-town charm, easy access to various expressways, and a variety of recreational opportunities. It lies 50 miles northwest of downtown Chicago in McHenry County on the scenic Fox River, and covers 11.6 square miles. The village has experienced dramatic growth during the past decade, and it is estimated that by 2030, the population of McHenry will reach 48,502.

The site of the filming of the 2006 movie, "The Lake House," starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, McHenry is conveniently located at the intersection of Routes 120 and 31, just minutes away from Interstates 90, 94 and 43. It is also served by Metra commuter rail service. McHenry has three distinct downtown areas, which include Main Street, Green Street and Riverside Drive. All three areas consist of a variety of shops as well as service-oriented businesses.

McHenry has a wide variety of housing choices, including spacious custom-designed single-family homes in newer subdivisions, and homes on large parcels of land in older neighborhoods. There are also many condominiums and townhouse complexes. Many of the housing options are located near shopping centers, schools, parks and numerous recreational facilities. The median price of a single-family home is $200,000 (2004).

Leisure-time choices are many. There are 35 local parks and playgrounds, boat launches on the Fox River, a municipal swimming pool, lighted tennis courts and 24 McHenry County golf courses. Villagers can also attend the many family-oriented community festivals, relax at nearby Moraine Hills State Park and Chain O'Lakes Park, and enroll in basketball, gymnastics, tumbling, archery and other fitness programs offered by the McHenry Parks and Recreation Department. In addition, they can have some fun at the McHenry Zone Skate and Bike Park, which was built in 2001, and is located in Knox Park, a quarter mile north of Bull Valley Road.
