Lynwood is a small town of about 7,377 (2000) located 25 miles south of downtown Chicago in Cook County. Midway Airport is 25 miles away; Lansing Municipal Airport is one mile away. It is surrounded by Lansing to the north, Glenwood to the west, Sauk Village to the south, and Munster and Dyer, Indiana to the east. The Indiana state line borders the entire eastern edge of Lynwood. The village covers a total area of five square miles.
In Lynwood or in adjacent communities, there are two elementary schools, one junior high, two high schools, two trade and technical schools, two community colleges, and one four-year college. Governors State University in nearby University Park, offers upper level and gradual level degree programs. Chicago State University, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Purdue University, Indiana University and Calumet College are within 10 to 25 miles of Lynwood.
For recreation, villagers can visit any number of nearby golfing clubs including Briar Ridge Country Club in Schererville, Indiana, Longwood Country Club in Crete, Illinois, Wicker Park Golf Course in Highland, Indiana, Lake Hills Golf Club in Shererville, and Glenwoodie Golf Course in Glenwood, Illinois.
For shopping, residents can go to the Town Square Shopping Center on U.S. Highway 41 in Schererville, Indiana, to River Oaks Shopping Center in Calumet City, Illinois, or to the downtown Park Forest shopping district in Park Forest, Illinois. They can also bowl a few games at Stardust Bowl in Dyer, Indiana, and take out some books at the McConathy Public Library in Sauk Village, Illinois or at Dyer-Schererville Library in Schererville, Indiana.
A plan is in the works by the Ho-Chunk Indian Nation of Wisconsin to build a reservation within Lynwood. The tribe has been purchasing land in the village and hopes to place the land into a trust. The ultimate goal of the tribe is to create a mega-resort, complete with casino gambling.
Welllington Court is a new single-family home development that is being built by semi-custom home builder Montalbano Homes in Lynwood. It will feature three to six-bedroom homes, ranging in size from 1,894 square feet to 3,147 square feet. Prices start at $269,900.
