Logan Square District Real Estate

A neighborhood of historic, grand boulevards, Logan Square is located five miles to the north and west of Chicago's downtown district. It covers an area of 3.23 miles, and has a population of 82,715 (2000). Named for General John A. Logan who served in the Civil War, and later in the U.S. Congress, Logan Square's borders include the NIRC railroad on the west, the North Branch of the Chicago River on the east, Diversey Avenue on the north, and the SOO Line railroad on the south. In 1985, the boulevards of Logan Square were placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the most impressive intersections in the city is the square itself, which is located at the junction of Kedzie and Logan Boulevards and Milwaukee Avenue; it features the Illinois Centennial Memorial Column, which was built in 1918 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Illinois' statehood. Designed by famed architect Henry Bacon, the architect of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the landmark is a single 70-foot-tall marble Doric column topped by an eagle, in reference to the Illinois state flag.

The neighborhood has more than 100 restaurants, bakeries, bistros and cafes, and a variety of dining options from which to choose. Each August, visitors and residents can sample a variety of cuisines at the Taste of Logan Square.

Logan Square is an economically and ethnically diverse community: in recent years, college-educated artists and professionals have taken up residence alongside the working class population of residents. The neighborhood features a variety of housing styles including multi-family dwellings, Prairie, Art Nouveau, and Gothic styles of architecture. Housing also includes distinguished greystones that sport beautiful stonework and Victorian and Neoclassical details, and are comprised of Indiana limestone. Many homes include original stained glass and carved woodwork. Each September, visitors can view the community's beautiful, century-old mansions during Logan Square's Historic Mansion House Tour. Single-family homes run from $160,000 to $425,000.
