Lockport Real Estate

Incorporated in 1830 and home to 20,000 residents, the Will County village of Lockport lies nestled in the Des Plaines River Valley 35 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, and five miles north of Joliet. It covers 7.1 square miles, and can be easily reached via Interstate Highways 80 and 55. The distance to Midway Airport is 25 miles, and O'Hare International Airport is located 30 miles away.

Lockport has a fascinating history, which can be re-discovered, along with its unique architecture, by strolling alongside the stone warehouses adjacent to the Illinois and Michigan Canal in the downtown section of town. The canal was the first navigable link to the Mississippi River, and today, Lockport has one of the best preserved canal sites around. There are remnants of flour mills and grain warehouses, stone barges, and boatyards, and some of the quaint cottages that housed many of the canal workers still exist.

In fact, a variety of architectural styles reminiscent of earlier times - Greek Revival, Victorian, stone, and Romanesque-style architecture - still color the streets of Lockport. Some structures remain almost intact, such as the canal superintendent's office and home, which is now the Illinois & Michigan Canal Museum.

Downtown Lockport has an historic district that is part of the 120-mile-long Illinois & Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor. The historic district is bounded by the canal, 7th Street, Washington Street, and 11th Street. It features approximately 37 historic sites and structures that visitors can explore.

Lockport has a diverse assortment of housing styles that includes historic houses and small cottages as well as newly-constructed family residences. Some of the village's newest homes are located in the area of Farrell and Gouger Roads near a police station and school. The median price of a single-family home is $149,700 (2000).

Lockport students attend a variety of public and private primary and middle schools. Lockport Township High School serves older students; its graduation rate is 91.4%, and the average ACT composite score is 22.3. Area colleges include Lewis University in Romeoville, and Joliet Junior College and St. Francis University in Joliet.
