Lemont Real Estate

Located in Cook County, 27 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and 30 minutes from Midway Airport, the village of Lemont is one of the oldest communities in northeastern Illinois and has a most unique history. Settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1873, its fascinating heritage began in the late 1830s with the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and with the settling of immigrant workers in the area. By the mid 1880s, the quarrying of limestone became Lemont's main industry, and was the primary cause of the village's growth. Today, many local examples of buildings built with Lemont limestone still exist, including the historic Water Tower landmark on North Michigan Avenue in Chicago.

Lemont has a population of 13,098 (2,000). It boasts hilly, tree-lined streets and thousands of acres of woodlife and forest preserves. The forest preserves contain a total of 65 miles of hiking and biking trails open year-round. In addition, Lemont has created over six miles of trails along the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal. Constructed in the mid-19th century in order to link the growing Great Lakes area to the East Coast waterways, the trails feature spellbinding natural views of the Canal and the Des Plaines River Valley. The new Heritage Quarries Recreation Area adds an additional 3.8 mile trail extension to the existing Illinois & Michigan Canal trails. Four pedestrian bridges provide access to hiking, biking and fishing amenities.

In their leisure time, villagers can also golf at numerous courses in the area, and take classes at the village's community center, which offers a large number of activities for persons of all ages. They can also spend their time shopping in the bustling downtown area, which features a large number of shops and restaurants.

In terms of housing, Lemont offers a variety of styles including ranches, bungalows, Victorians, and new homes constructed in a number of subdivisions. The average price of a single-family home is $244,742 (2000); some custom-built homes sell for well over $1 million dollars.
