Lake in the Hills Real Estate

Once a sleepy little lakeside town with dirt roads, farms and small ranch-style homes, the McHenry County village of Lake in the Hills has experienced dramatic growth since the 1990s when developers flocked to the area. With a population of just under 6,000 in 1990, the town now has over 27,000 residents.

The village covers 9.6 square miles, and is located one hour northwest of downtown Chicago. Housing includes lower-priced townhomes as well as higher-priced single-family residences located in Boulder Ridge, a golf course community located west of Randall Road, where prices range from $400,000 to $1 million dollars. There are also a number of other subdivisions that have been developed within the past 15 years, including Presidential Park, a group of older homes; Cunat Court, a group of three-story condominiums; Spring Lake Farm, comprised of single-family homes selling for about $200,000; and the Bellchase neighborhood, which contains townhomes, small two-story residences and much larger homes. The median price of a single-family home in 2000 was $166,400.

Current projects as of July, 2006 included: the construction of 176 townhomes on the west side of Haligus Road; the construction of 39 single-family homes on the east side of Haligus Road, north of Miller Road; the construction of 13 single-family homes on the east side of Lakewood Road, south of Miller Road; and the building of 114 single-family homes and a parksite on the south side of Ackman Road, east of Lakewood Road.

Residents can have fun boating, fishing, swimming, or picnicking on Woods Creek Lake; enjoy a nature walk in The Lake in the Hills Fen; walk their dogs in the Lake in the Hills Dog Park; enjoy a round of golf at the Boulder Ridge Golf Course and Country Club; or go to the Summer Sunset Festival in Sunset Park, featuring live music, food, a carnival, and a fireworks display. The park district has more than a dozen parks that feature a wide range of amenities including several baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, playground equipment, picnic shelters, tennis courts, a basketball court, a skate park, and beach and boating areas.

Villagers can do their shopping along the northern edge of the Randall Road corridor. Other major shopping plazas include The Centre, located at the northeast corner of Randall and Algonquin Roads; Acorn Plaza; Randall Plaza situated at the northwest corner of Randall and Algonquin Roads, Bellchase Commons, located at the southeast corner of Algonquin and Lakewood Roads, and several other shopping centers located adjacent to Algonquin Road.

In terms of education, there are a large number of primary and middle schools that serve the students of Lake in the Hills. High schools serving Lake in the Hills include Huntley High School in Huntley; Harry D. Jacobs High School in Algonquin; and Crystal Lake South High School in Crystal Lake.
