Lake Villa Real Estate

Lake Villa is located in Lake County, close to the Wisconsin border and 42 miles north of downtown Chicago. It is part of the Chain O'Lakes area, which contains many recreational opportunities and beautiful and scenic wooded landscapes. People are attracted to Lake Villa because of its small-town charm, a variety of housing options, and a locale that's situated far away from the congestion of suburbs closer to Chicago.

The area now known as Lake Villa was the brainchild of merchant E.J. Lehmann, founder of the Fair Department Store on State Street in Chicago. Lehmann bought land between Cedar Lake and Deep Lake in the Lake Villa area, and built a private resort and a lavish 150-room hotel to entertain friends and guests. He hoped to call the area "Lake City," but as there was already a town by that name in Illinois, the name "Lake Villa" was chosen.

Currently, Lake Villa has a population of 5,800 and covers an area of 5.7 square miles. Interstate 94 is about five minutes away, and for those residents who want to travel into downtown Chicago, the Metra Wisconsin Central Line station on Cedar Avenue is available. The Milwaukee District North Line station in Grayslake is also nearby for travel into Chicago. O'Hare Airport is 37 miles away.

The median single-family home value according to 2000 U.S. Census data is $207,200. Many of the village's single-family residences are located on Lake Michigan, and there are also some older and starter homes as well. Some large estates with private beaches are priced well over $1 million dollars. The population of Lake Villa in 1990 was 2,857, but increased dramatically by 2000 to 5,864, as developers built thousands of homes, along with a strip mall and business center.

The village borders the Grant Woods Forest Preserve, which has beautiful walking trails. Lake Villa's three parks include Lehmann Park, which provides boat launching, volleyball, a picnic area and playground equipment; Steven Sherwood Memorial Park, which contains a children's playground, tennis courts, volleyball, and a horseshoe pit, and Glacier Park, which has swimming and a boat launch.

There are a number of excellent public and private primary and middle schools that younger Lake Villa students can attend. Many older students attend Lake Villa High School, located on Grand Avenue.
