La Grange Real Estate

The site of the filming of the movie, "While You Were Sleeping," the village of La Grange sits 14 miles west of downtown Chicago and covers 2.5 square miles. It boasts two historic districts and housing that includes large Victorians, Prairie and Georgian-style residences, ranch homes, and stucco houses. Condominiums and townhomes are also available. The median house value in 2000 was $271,800, and the population is 15,608 (2000).

Interstate 290, Interstate 55 and the Tri-State Tollway all provide easy automobile access to La Grange; O'Hare International Airport, Midway Airport and downtown Chicago are only 30 minutes away.

La Grange has an excellent school system, which is anchored by nationally-ranked Lyons Township High School. Six elementary and two junior high schools serve 2,500 students. The community also contains 270-bed La Grange Memorial Hospital, which is a Level II Trauma Center.

A variety of recreational activities is provided by the Park District of La Grange. Founded in 1929, the Park District maintains 67 acres of parkland at 11 locations, and offers over 300 recreation programs. Currently, a Park District warehouse is being remodeled into a recreation center that will contain a gymnasium, a dance and aerobics room, an indoor play area, a 1/8 mile indoor walking and running track, and other amenities.

In their spare time, residents can also visit nearby Brookfield Zoo, or attend weekly and annual events that the village or other organizations sponsor. These include a Pet Parade, held the first Saturday in June; an "Experience La Grange Weekend", held the same time as the Pet Parade and featuring carnival rides, games and food and beverage vendors; a weekly Farmer's Market from June to October; the West End Arts Festival, held in September and featuring the artwork of over 150 artists; a Halloween Walk; and an annual Christmas Walk, which features carolers, costumed Dickens characters and horse-drawn carriages.

The town has an old-fashioned downtown area with approximately 300 retail shops, including the 70-seat Hudson's Ice Cream Emporium. Downtown La Grange's Calendar Court, turned into a pedestrian mall in 1976, and was opened to traffic in 1992.
