Kenilworth Real Estate

An affluent suburb located 16 miles north of downtown Chicago, the Cook County village of Kenilworth is one of the wealthiest in the nation. It features outstanding schools, excellent park and recreation programs, picturesque scenery and beautiful homes. With a population of 2,494, Kenilworth covers 0.6 of a square mile, and is one of eight Chicago suburban communities commonly referred to as part of the "North Shore." Its name was taken from a town in the midlands of England. The village's first parcel of woodland, pasture and wetlands was purchased by Joseph Sears in 1889 at a cost of $150,300. Seven years late, the population had reached 300 residents, and the legal requirement for incorporation as a village had been reached. According to Sears' recommendations, streets were platted to maximize the amount of sunlight coming into each home, utilities were placed underground, no alleys or fences were permitted, and there were paved streets and large lots. A colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright, town planner George W. Maher, then proceeded to design roughly 37 homes in the village, as well as the limestone pillars that mark entrances to the village, and the town's central water fountain.

Kenilworth features many magnificent homes with expansive property. Though primarily a single-family residence community, the town has a few condominiums and townhomes, many of which have numerous amenities and spectacular views. Single-family homes include two-story colonials, waterfront bungalows, and Cape Cod-style homes. Georgian-style estates and English Tudor homes start around $600,000 and go as high as several million dollars, while larger French provincial estates and traditional homes with spacious yards are priced from $1 million to $5 million and up.

The schools in Kenilworth are among the best in the nation, and scores on standardized tests reflect the excellence of the schools. Public high school students attend the highly-rated schools in New Trier Township High School District 203; private schools adjacent to Kenilworth include Loyola Academy in Wilmette, North Shore Country Day School in Winnetka and Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette.

For shopping, residents can visit a small shopping district that's located on Green Bay Road. For recreation, they can take advantage of a nearby beach and participate in activities offered by the Kenilworth Park District.
