Hyde Park Neighborhood Real Estate

Bordered by Lake Michigan on the east, Washington Park on the west, 47th Street on the north, and 61st Street on the south, the Hyde Park community is located 15 minutes from downtown Chicago, and is closely identified with the University of Chicago. The neighborhood was the site of the World Columbian Exposition in 1893, celebrating the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The reconstructed Museum of Science and Industry at 5700 South Lake Shore Drive, is the only surviving landmark from that era.

Also located in the neighborhood are such well-known buildings as Rockefeller Chapel on the University of Chicago campus, DuSable Museum of African American History, the Oriental Institute, the David and Alfred Smart Museum of Art, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House, and the headquarters for Operation PUSH, founded by the Reverend Jesse L. Jackson.

The neighborhood's 41,000 residents enjoy a beautiful lakefront setting, a variety of recreational activities, affordable housing, and a lively cultural scene. Restaurants and bookstores line 57th Street, and residents can take advantage of a variety of cuisines. In their leisure time, they can also see a play at the renowned Court Theatre, sample some tasty fare at Valois Café, or stroll down 55th Street and eat some Middle Eastern cuisine. They can also shop for groceries at the Hyde Park Co-op on E. 55th Street. Founded in 1932, the Co-op is one of the oldest cooperative grocery stores in the United States.

Residents and visitors alike can jog, picnic, bike or swim at Promontory Point Park, located at the eastern boundary of Hyde Park. Landscaped in 1937 by Alfred Caldwell in the Prairie School style, the area includes a fieldhouse and is one of the most beautiful spots in Chicago.

In addition to the University of Chicago, Hyde Park has dozens of pre-schools, elementary, middle and high schools. High Schools include Hyde Park Academy, Kenwood Academy, Hales Franciscan High School, Mount Carmel High School, and the University of Chicago Lab School. Hyde Park schools consistently rank among the best in the Chicago area.

Residential real estate ranges from older-style bungalows to upscale single-family homes, condominiums and mansions; home prices range from a modest $100,000 to nearly $3 million dollars for large estate properties.
