Located 25 miles south of downtown Chicago, the Cook County suburb of Homewood offers nationally acclaimed elementary and high school districts, a top-rated park district, beautiful forest preserves, an excellent library, and a wide assortment of housing styles. Homewood covers 5.3 square miles, and has a total of 19,543 people (2000).

The village has a large number of excellent public and private elementary and middle schools. Almost all students participate in at least one extracurricular activity; the school boasts 60 clubs and 26 interscholastic sports.

The Homewood Flossmoor Park District has been widely recognized as one of the best in the state. Activities for persons of all ages are held at one of the Park District's many venues including a racquetball and fitness club, ice arena, large community center, and thirty parks. In addition, the James Hart School/Millennium School campus is home to the Homewood-Flossmoor Sports Complex, which is holds a gymnasium with three full-sized volleyball courts.

New on the scene is the Coyote Run Golf Course- an 18-hole course that's operated by the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District. It features a lighted driving range, practice greens, a pro-shop, and the Northwoods restaurant, which provides year-round full-service dining. Other golf courses in the area provide additional recreational opportunities for Homewood residents. The nearby Olympia Fields Country Club was host to the Senior Open in 1997, and the prestigious U.S. Open in 2003.

The Izaak Walton Preserve maintains woodlands, ancient sand dunes, native prairie, wetlands, picnic grounds and stocked fishing lakes. Many Homewood residents picnic, go birding, play sports, or walk along all or part of the five miles of scenic trails contained in the Preserve.

The community's 41,500-square-foot library includes a drive-up window where materials can be picked-up and returned. The library offers a large variety of books and other materials, and programs and classes are offered to persons of all ages.

For shopping, villagers can visit Homewood's vibrant downtown shopping area, as well as the Halsted Street shopping corridor and Cherry Creek Shopping Center. Many well-known stores and shops are located in the suburb, and Homewood boasts a variety of small cafes, restaurants and outdoor dining spots.

The village hosts festive fall and New Year's Eve celebrations, as well as Homewood Days, a three-day event with crafts, food and live musical performances. Railroad Heritage Days is another Homewood mainstay: it features a vintage and classic automobile parade through town.

Homewood contains a variety of housing styles including Cape Cods, bungalows, ranches, and Tudor-style homes. Some older homes border the Ravisloe Country Club. The median price of a home in 2000 was $131,700.
