Hickory Hills is a village in Cook County that lies 22 miles southwest of downtown Chicago and 15 minutes from Midway Airport. It boasts a good school system, a variety of recreational activities, and a range of housing styles and prices. Hickory Hills covers 2.8 square miles, and has approximately 14,000 residents. Once called North Palos because of its location within Palos Township, Hickory Hills was given its current name in 1966 because of its rolling hills and numerous hickory trees.
In recent years, several new neighborhoods of single-family homes, townhomes and condos have been built. Housing styles include split-levels, tri-levels, ranches and bungalows. The average price of a home in 2000 was $168,533. In July, 2006, a three-bedroom, two-bath split-level home on South 82nd Court was listed at $329,000, while a five-bedroom, two and one-half bath home on South 83rd Court was selling for $549,900.
For education, students can attend one of six elementary schools in Districts 117 and 109. High school students can attend Stagg High School on S. Roberts Road in Palos Hills in District 230, or Argo Community High School on West 63rd Street in nearby Summit. College-aged students can attend Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Northwest Business College in Bridgeview, St. Xavier University in Chicago, or Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights.
Hickory Hills has three major strip malls within its boundaries: Hickory/Palos Square, Hill Creek and Hickory Plaza. For recreation, residents can go to the Hickory Hills Country Club, or visit the more than 20 golf courses in the southwest suburban region. Residents can also take advantage of park district facilities that include ball fields, picnic areas, a gym, and tennis and volleyball courts. There are also many biking and hiking trails in the village, and during the summer, there are street fairs and weekly concerts.
