Located 40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the upscale Lake County suburb of Hawthorn Woods is bordered by Long Grove on the east and southeast, Kildeer on the south, Lake Zurich on the southwest, and North Barrington on the west. The village covers an area of approximately 5.4 square miles, and is predominately a residential community. It once consisted of only 141 residents at the time of its incorporation in 1958; it now consists of approximately 6,000 residents.
Homes are pricey in Hawthorn Woods: the median house value in 2000 was $395,000, and prices have appreciated considerably since then. In July, 2006, a three-bedroom, two-bath home on Lochanora Drive was selling for $639,900, while a four-bedroom, four-bath residence on Old Lake Road was listed for $1,599,900. House styles range from historic farmhouses to mansions.
Hawthorn Woods has nine parks with over 80 acres of parkland. This provides residents with opportunities to play various sports, fish, hike, ice skate, go sledding and have fun at various playgrounds. Villagers can also spend their leisure time golfing at a number of area courses, working out at the Foglia YMCA in Lake Zurich; and listening to a series of summer outdoor concerts at Community Park at Old McHenry and Quentin Roads.
Elementary students attend either Fremont School District #79 with an enrollment of 1,266, Lake Zurich Unit School District #95 with a total of 5,769 enrolled, or the Kildeer/Countryside School District #96 with 3,464 enrolled. High school students attend classes at Adlai E. Stevenson High School District #125, Lake Zurich High School in District #95 or Mundelein High School District #120. There are two private elementary schools and one parochial school in nearby Lake Zurich. Of residents 25 years of age or older, 97.2 percent have a high school diploma, 60.2 percent have a bachelor's degree or higher, and 22.5 percent have a graduate or professional degree.
