Harvey Real Estate

The village of Harvey--once known as South Lawn--was founded by Turlington Harvey, a wealthy lumberman and banker, who in the late 19th century, transformed prairie land- without streets, sidewalks, water, sewers, factories, schools, churches or homes- into a community that grew to 5,000 within a three-year period. That tremendous growth earned Harvey the name, "Magic City."

Today, Harvey is a Chicago suburb of about 31,000 residents. It sits about 19 miles south of downtown Chicago, covers six square miles, and is bordered by the suburbs of Dixmoor, Riverdale and Blue Island on the north, Posen and Markham on the west, South Holland, Phoenix and Dolton on the east, and East Hazel Crest to the south. Harvey is the hometown of comedian Tom Dreesen, and gained fame in 1980 as the filming location of a car chase scene in the movie, "The Blues Brothers."

Harvey residents have a number of recreational activities from which to choose. The more than 15 parks within the village contain basketball courts, baseball diamonds, picnic areas, and a recreational center. In addition, young people in Harvey can participate in the Harvey Boxing Club.

In terms of education, students attend a large number of public and private elementary, middle and high schools. Older students can attend Jules Hutton Christian Institute (PK-12); Youth Watch Educational Services (PK-12), or Thornton Township High School on Broadway.

For shopping, residents can visit nearby South Holland, and shop at that village's large stores and smaller boutiques. They can also shop at the enclosed River Oaks Shopping Center in Calumet City, which contains four major department stores and 104 other stores, shops and restaurants.
