Home of the always-popular Six Flags Great America Amusement Park, as well as the Gurnee Mills outlet mall, the village of Gurnee is located 45 miles north of downtown Chicago and just north of Waukegan in Lake County. The Kennedy Expressway and U.S. 41 are nearby; to travel into downtown Chicago, commuters can board a Metra train in Libertyville or Waukegan, and the ride takes one hour.
The population of Gurnee is 28,834 (2000). In addition to spending time at Great America in their leisure time, residents can relax at a large number of facilities operated by the Gurnee Park District. They can spend some time at 23 park sites, including Gowe Beach, which offers swimming, a water slide and a canoe launch into the nearby Des Plaines River, or visit Viking Park, which contains softball fields, basketball courts and a hiking trail. Villagers can also play some golf at the Bittersweet Golf Club, an 18-hole championship public golf facility located on 240 acres of property, see a play performed by the Gurnee Theatre Company or have some fun at the 60,000-square-foot Rink Side Family Entertainment Center in the Gurnee Mills Mal. The facility includes an NHL-size ice skating arena, a game and ride area, a 2000-square foot laser tag arena and other amenities.
Gurnee Mills outlet mall houses over 200 shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. It includes such popular stores as the Abercrombie ∓ Fitch outlet store, the Gap outlet, the Banana Republic factory store, and the JCPenney outlet store. Shoppers can also spend some time at the 20-screen Gurnee Marcus Cinema, and at a variety of dining establishments.
Single-family housing styles include Victorians, colonials, Cape Cods and ranches. In August, 2006, a three-bedroom, 2.1-bath single-family residence was listed for $$279,900; a four-bedroom, 2.1-bath single-family home was selling for $399,900; and a 4,000-square-foot, custom-built four-bedroom, three-bath single-family home was listed for $749,900.
