Glenwood Real Estate

The Cook County village of Glenwood lies 23 miles south of downtown Chicago. Nearby towns include Homewood, Flossmoor, East Hazel Crest, Thornton, and Chicago Heights. Glenwood covers approximately four and one-half square miles, and its population is 9,000 (2000). It is located 23 miles from Midway Airport.

Glenwood is also home to the south campus of the Glenwood School for Boys and Girls, a privately-funded school that was established in 1887 by Robert Todd Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln's son) and Oscar Dudley. The school is also a community supported non-profit organization that provides socially and economically disadvantaged children with a comprehensive residential, education and life-skills program in a safe, structured and nurturing environment. Glenwood School exists primarily for the single parent or guardian raising a family, but will accept students from two parent families facing difficulty or hardship.

Glenwood's housing stock is comprised of a variety of architectural styles, ranging from turn-of-the-century homes to modern condominiums and split-level homes. The downtown district features older Cape Cod residences and ranch-style home built primarily in the 1920s and 1930s. There is some renovation of older homes taking place, and some of the newest neighborhoods include upscale developments with large, custom-built homes. In August, 2006, a two-bedroom, two-bath condominium in Glenwood was priced at $207,000; a three-bedroom, two-bath single-family home was listed for $299,900. Many residences in Glenwood are conveniently located within walking distance of the area's schools and shopping districts.

Students who live in Glenwood receive a top-notch education, as the Glenwood area is well-known for its outstanding schools. Students are served by Elementary Schools Districts #167 (Brookwood), #153 (Homewood-Flossmoor), and by High School Districts #206 (Bloom Township) and #233 (Homewood-Flossmoor). The community is also served by one parochial school and two private schools.

The 18-hole Glenwoodie Golf Course at 193rd and State Streets provides one recreational option for residents. They can also relax at the five park sites and two nature preserves that are located in the village. In their spare time, villagers can also visit the Glenwood-Lynwood Library and browse through a collection of about 30,000 books.

The Calumet Expressway, Interstate 80 and the Tri-State Tollway are close by. Commuters can also board a train from the Homewood station to travel into downtown Chicago; the trip takes around 40 minutes.
