Glencoe Real Estate

Home of the beautiful Chicago Botanic Garden, the North Shore community of Glencoe is located 22 miles north of downtown. It boasts many architecturally significant structures (including nine Frank Lloyd Wright residences), a scenic forest-like setting, and a quaint downtown shopping district. Nearby towns include Highland Park (to the north), Winnetka (to the south) and Northbrook (to the west). The population of Glencoe is 8,762.

The Chicago Botanic Garden is one of the country's most visited public gardens. The 385-acre Garden features 23 display gardens and three native habitats, located on nine islands that are surrounded by lakes. Visitors from throughout the Chicago area come to the Botanic Garden to view the many plants and flowers, to picnic on the premises, and to walk and bike on the grounds.

Housing is expensive in Glencoe. In August, 2006, a three-bedroom, two-bath single-family home was selling for $515,000; a five-bedroom, 2.1-bath single-family residence was listed for $839,000; a five-bedroom, 4.1-bath single family home was selling for $1,400,000; and a six-bedroom, four-bath single-family residence was selling for $2,695,000.

In terms of recreation, they can relax in the many recreational spots maintained by the park district: 18 parks, ice rinks, community centers, tennis courts, and bicycle and jogging paths. Recreation enthusiasts can also spend some time at two nature sanctuaries or at a local beach.

The Village of Glencoe oversees the Glencoe Golf Club, which was established in 1921 by a group of Glencoe residents as an alternative to private country club membership. The 18-hole golf course is considered one of the finest public golf facilities on the North Shore.

The schools that serve Glencoe students are some of the finest in the country. New Trier High School has been included in the "top ten" and "most successful" lists of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Parade magazine. The school was also identified as "quite possibly the best public school in America" by Town and Country magazine. Approximately 98 percent of the students of the Class of 2005 matriculated to college. Furthermore, of the 977 students in the Class of 2005, 12 were National Merit Scholarship Winners, 32 were National Merit Semifinalists, and 68 received Letters of Commendation. For the class of 2005, the mean ACT composite score was 26.8.

The Edens Expressway is close by. To travel into downtown Chicago, commuters can board a Metra train in the village; the ride takes just under 40 minutes (30 minutes express).
