Located 41 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and near I-90, the town of Gilberts was incorporated in 1890, and currently has a population of 4,472 (2004 special census). It is located in Kane County 32 miles away from O'Hare, 17 miles from the DuPage Airport and eight miles from Lake in the Hills Airport. It covers an area of 3.2 square miles. Nearby communities include Dundee, West Dundee, Elgin, Carpentersville, Lake in the Hills, and Algonquin.

Single-family housing styles include colonials, ranches and Victorians. In August, 2006, a three-bedroom, three-bath single-family residence was listed for $387,000; a four-bedroom, two-bath single-family home was selling for $549,900; and a four-bedroom, 3.1-bath single-family home was listed for $677,777. A new development is the Gilberts Town Center Townhomes located on Town Center Boulevard, and built by Ryland Homes.

For shopping, residents can head on out to stores located on the Randall Road Corridor or visit Spring Hill Mall in nearby West Dundee, which contains restaurants and stores such as Crate and Barrel, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor and other well-known retail establishments. In their leisure time, they can also get some exercise on the village's baseball and soccer fields, and in the summertime cruise the Fox River on the popular Algonquin Price boat. Other leisure-time opportunities include taking in an art show, dance or musical performance at Elgin Community College; visiting the popular Haeger Potteries and Milk Pail restaurant in nearby East Dundee, and spending a day in the numerous parks, biking and hiking trails that dot the area.

Students attend Sleepy Hollow Elementary School in Sleepy Hollow, where the student/ teacher ration is 28/1. Middle school students attend Dundee Middle School (grades 5-8) in nearby West Dundee where the student/teacher radio is 6.6/1, and high school students go to Jacobs High School in Algonquin, where the student/teacher ratio is 13.4/1.
