Garfield Ridge, formerly Archer Limits, is a relatively young and well ordered neighborhood of single-family houses along the western boundary of the city. It takes its name from Garfield Boulevard (55th Street), a main east-west thoroughfare. Garfield Ridge borders Midway Airport, known collectively as just "Midway". Garfield Ridge stretches southward from the Stevenson Expressway to 59th street, and from Cicero Avenue to Harlem Avenue going west. The area reaches 10 miles west of the Loop.
Home to just over 36,000 residents, the community has a unique blend of different cultures. Garfield Ridge is experiencing an explosion in new home construction and homes run from $200,000 to $425,000. The average home sales price for a single family home or condo was $269,441 in July 2006.
Entertainment options in Garfield Ridge include the neighborhood spots, the world famous Pauline's La-Keeler Lounge, Pepper Box, and Bossman Blues Center. Garfield Ridge is also home to the I.C.E. Lawndale 10 movie theaters.
There are a number of Chicago Public Schools that serve the area. These include Kinzie, Byrne, and Mark Twain Elementary Schools, and Kennedy High School. Garfield Ridge also has numerous Chicago Parks which include Wentworth, Valley Forge, Vittum and Stars and Stripes.
