Gage Park Real Estate

Bounded by 49th Street, 59th Street, Western Avenue and Central Park Avenue on Chicago's southwest side, the neighborhood of Gage Park contains a number of active community organizations including the Gage Park Business Association, which works diligently to bring new businesses into the community, and encourages business owners and residents to participate in community affairs.

Gage Park lies seven miles southwest of downtown Chicago. According to 2000 U.S. Census statistics, the population is 39,193, a dramatic increase from 1990 figures, which reported a population of 26,957. The neighborhood boasts many well-maintained brick bungalows, Georgians, Cape Cods and ranch-style homes, as well as a number of condominiums, townhomes and two and three-flats. Housing is very moderately-priced in Gage Park; 2005 figures show that the average price of a single-family home was $205,780; and the average sales price of a condominium or townhome was $109,000. In August, 2006, a five-bedroom, two-bath 2,370-square foot single-family home on South Maplewood Avenue was listed for $259,900.

Gage Park- the park- was named in honor of George W. Gage, a prominent businessman, attorney and South Park commissioner. After he died in office in 1875, his fellow board members decided to name a new park located at the intersection of Western Avenue and Garfield Boulevard after him. The park eventually included ball fields, tennis courts, a wading pool, and a beautiful sunken garden with a formal reflecting pool and colonnade. In 1918, several small land purchases were made to extend the park's southern boundary. A year later, a swimming pool, separate men's and women's outdoor gymnasiums and a children's playground were constructed. In 1928, a fieldhouse was constructed, and several years later, two murals adorned the buildings' interior.

For shopping, residents can head on out to a shopping center at 57th Street and Kedize, Avenue, or to various strip malls in the village. There are also a number of stores located on Archer Avenue where they can do their shopping. In their spare time villagers can visit the well-known Baby Doll Polka Club on South Central Avenue or bowl some games at Miami Bowl on South Archer Avenue.
