The town of Fox Lake is located in the heart of the Chain O'Lakes area in Lake County. Long known as a resort and recreation community, it is one of the Chicago area's favorite destinations for fishing, hunting, boating, and vacationing. It has a population of approximately 10,000, and is located 50 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. In recent years, there has been an influx of permanent residents as well as a downtown revitalization that has signaled an exciting period of growth within the community.
Fox Lake has a wide variety of housing prices and plentiful shopping. Single-family housing ranges from two and three-bedroom cottages to properties priced at $1 million dollars or more. Housing styles also include colonials, ranches and bungalows. Some residents are buying older houses and rehabilitating them or tearing them down to rebuild. Condominiums are also available. In July, 2006, a three-bedroom, one-bath single-family home on Pine Avenue was listed for $158,500, while a five-bedroom, four-bath residence on Eastshore Drive was selling for $769,900.
The Fox Lake Parks & Recreation Department provides residents with a wide assortment of recreational activities. Recent offerings included line dancing on Wednesday mornings and evenings; soccer programs for children; and a "Family Olympics" class offering such sports as T-ball, basketball, soccer and football.
The Fox Lake Public Library on Grand Avenue has over 70,000 adult and children's books, videotapes, compact discs and recorded books. Other offerings include a summer reading program and basic Internet and computer classes.
There are a number of public and private elementary schools in the area. High schoolers attend Grant Community High School, and older students can go to the College of Lake County in nearby Grayslake.
For shopping, residents can drive to the intersection of U.S. 12 and Illinois Highway 134 where a 400,000-square-foot shopping center is located. Also at the intersection is Fox Lake Square, which contains a number of other stores.
