The community of Flossmoor is located 25 miles south of downtown Chicago and 17 miles from Midway Airport. It features a side range of housing styles including ranches, split-levels, Cape Cod homes, Georgians, and Tudor-style residences. Older homes are situated near the downtown area, while many newer residences are found in the Heather Hills subdivision. Many of the village's costliest homes sell for $1 million dollars or more, and overlook numerous golf courses in the area. According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, the average home price was $269,500.
Flossmoor has an excellent school system. There are four public elementary schools and one junior high; private and parochial schools also serve Flossmoor students. High school students attend Homewood- Flossmoor High School on Kedzie Avenue; 92 percent of students go on to college.
Flossmoor's historic downtown shopping district offers a variety of shops and railroads, all within walking distance of the railroad station. A Tudor-style Civic Center building, built in 1929, features a mix of retail stores, restaurants, offices, and apartments. Residents can also shop at the Flossmoor Commons shopping complex located on Vollmer Road between Kedzie Avenue and Governor's Highway. It houses a variety of upscale shops and service businesses.
The Flossmoor Public Library offers over 56,000 books, magazines, books on tape and compact discs. The village's park district has been ranked the best health and fitness facility in the Chicago southland community for a number of years. Facilities include an 110,000-square-foot building featuring 10 indoor tennis courts, a full-equipped fitness center, an indoor track, a lap pool, and a state-of-the-art wellness center.
