Downtown Chicago Real Estate

The opening of Millennium Park in 2004 has transformed downtown Chicago, bringing thousands of additional visitors into the area each day. Located on prestigious Michigan Avenue, Millennium Park's boundaries include Michigan Avenue to the west, Columbus Drive to the east, Randolph Street to the north, and Monroe Street to the south.

Designed by world-famous architect Frank Gehry, the 24.5-acre park features the Pritzker Pavilion, an outdoor music venue; the Harris Theater for Music and Dance; an upscale restaurant as well as a casual outdoor dining spot; the Crown Fountain, which consists of two 50-foot block towers at the end of a shallow reflecting pool onto which the faces of Chicago citizens are reflected; an ice skating rink; the beautiful Lurie gardens; and Cloud Gate, a 110-ton-elliptical sculpture that Chicagoans have nicknamed "the Bean."

The historical center of downtown Chicago is called the "Loop," which is technically considered to be the five-by-seven-block area contained within the circuit formed by the elevated Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) transit line. Those boundaries are Lake Street on the north, Wells Street on the west, Van Buren on the south, and Wabash Avenue on the east. The second largest downtown business district in the United States after midtown Manhattan, the area contains many notable buildings and a wealth of outdoor sculptures including works by Picasso, Miro, Chagall, Calder and other artists.

Well-known Loop buildings include City Hall; the Chicago Theater, which showcases musical and comedy acts; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Goodman Theatre; the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; the historic Palmer House Hilton; the Richard J. Daley Center; the original Carson Pirie, Scott department store designed by famed architects Adler and Sullivan; the James R. Thompson (State of Illinois) building designed by Helmut Jahn; and the block-long Marshall Field department store--a Chicago institution that will be transformed into a flagship Macy's department store in September, 2006.

According to 2000 Census figures, approximately 16,000 people live in Chicago's downtown area. Real estate tends to be rather pricey. Among the new condo developments currently being built is the Legacy at Millennium Park --a 350-unit building at Randolph Street and Wabash Avenue. The building features deeded parking, along with a fitness club, outdoor terrace, sky deck, hospitality room, dog run, pool and concierge service. The building also has a secured entrance to Chicago's underground Pedway, providing indoor access to downtown office and civic buildings, shopping and local transportation.
