Darien Real Estate

Darien is south west of Chicago in southern Du Page County. There were 22,860 residents in 2000. It is located just off the Stevenson Expressway (I-55) or Interstate North/South Tollway. It was first settled by New Englanders who traveled from the Erie Canal and Great Lakes. The Thomas Andrus family was the first to settle there in 1835 when I-55 was an old stage coach line where businesses opened to cater to travelers. The Andrus Inn opened to serve 15 stage coaches that traveled the line, right above the entrance to the Carriage Way West Subdivision.

The Inn was followed by a tavern and a post office and those were the beginnings of the community called Cass. Settlers of all kinds continued to come until 1890 when the Village of Lace was established alongside of it. The city of Darien, named after Darien Connecticut is a result of the combination of Lace and Cass Villages. Four subdivisions that made up the city of Darien were incorporated in 1969.

Today, Darien is a prosperous community 18 miles south of downtown Chicago. Major employers for the village include Jewel Food Store, School District #61, Carriage Greens County Club, the University of Chicago Hospital Research division and Darien Town Centre mall. The shopping center has 217, 505 sq. ft. of rentable space with shops like Home Depot, T.G.I. Friday's restaurant, Panera Bread, and Pet Smart. Movie theaters, restaurants, golf courses, libraries and museums abound.

Darien is designed, has grown and will continue to grow as a planned community with single family and multiple residential buildings surrounded by convenient shopping areas. Commercial, light industrial and small business add to Darien's tax base. A once strictly rural community has been transformed to tree lined streets and inviting, comfortable homes. The median price for single family homes in Darien is $266,116 and can go way beyond that for private residences.

Darien Park District and Indian Prairie Library District offer year round programs. Darien's Park District includes 130 acres, 15 recreational facilities, leagues, and classes. It also includes a Sportsplex that features a wide range of equipment and facilities, large rooms for parties, receptions or meetings. The facility has a proshop, field house, a work out area and a food court. Programs for kids and seniors are a part of the program.

Darien has a wide range of first rate schools to statisfy a growing community's needs: three public and two parochial high schools, four juniour high schools, eleven public, two parochial and five private elementary schools along with one preschool.
