The village of Crystal Lake is located in McHenry County, 50 miles northwest of Chicago, and a short drive from O'Hare International Airport. Incorporated in 1914, it covers 16.2 square miles and contains approximately 38,000 residents.
In recent years, Crystal Lake has witnessed the construction of numerous new homes. New homes have been built in a variety of styles including ranches, colonials and two-stories. Older homes include split-levels and two-stories, and houses built along the lake, sell for top prices. Condominiums, apartments and townhomes are also available. In June, 2006, a four-bedroom, three-bath, lakefront single-family home with a pool and putting green was selling for $899,900. A three-bedroom, two-bath single-family home on a residential street was selling for $259,900.
Residents can shop in the historic downtown business district and at strip malls and shopping centers in the village including the enclosed Crystal Point Mall and at Crystal Lake Commons, an outdoor mall that was constructed in 1986. They can also visit the Crystal Lake Public Library on Paddock Street. The library's collection contains nearly 180,000 books in regular and large print, more than 350 magazine subscriptions, over 5,000 videos, and 1,800 audio books. The library also offers storytimes for children,
reading programs and cultural and instructional programs. Patrons unable to visit the library because of a short or long-term disability, may qualify for the library's outreach services.
Celebrating over 80 years in service, the Crystal Lake Park District has a wide variety of facilities available including the Golf Learning Center, the Racquet Club Tennis Center, a nature center and other sports and activity programs for persons of all ages. In their leisure time, residents can also visit the Crystal Lake Country Club and the Twin Ponds Golf Course.
Education is a top priority in Crystal Lake. Of those residents 25 years of age and older, 91.5 percent have finished high school. Younger students can choose from a large number of public primary and middle schools; high school students attend Crystal Lake South High School, Prairie Ridge High School or Crystal Lake Central High School.
