Crete Real Estate

A community that is known for its rural charm, Crete was founded in 1836 by Willard and Dyantha Wood, who traveled from Vermont in a covered wagon and settled on farmland in the center of Crete. Today, Crete is well-known for its many antique stores that line Main and Exchange Streets, and for Balmoral Park- the premier track for harness racing in the Chicago area. The village also boasts award-winning schools, a low crime rate, beautiful parks, lush, natural preserved areas, and more than one-half dozen golf courses.

Crete lies 30 miles south of Chicago's Loop in Will County. Route 1 runs north and south through the downtown business district, while the Calumet Expressway borders the village on the east. Other major nearby thoroughfares are US Route 30, I-57, I-80, I-94 and I-294. The town is comprised of approximately 7,700 residents and covers 6.4 square miles.

Crete's quiet, residential neighborhoods offer a wide range of housing styles. These include historic homes and newer, contemporary, single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums. Condo and townhomes are priced from $90,000 to $130,000. Single-family homes in Crete range from $90,000 to more than $650,000. Some housing is located in newer, residential communities, while other homes are located on luxurious wooded estates.

For recreation, residents can visit Balmoral Park Race Track on South Dixie Highway, spend some time at Crete's six parks, and take advantage of the many recreational programs offered by the Crete Park District such as adult softball, a day camp, and many other summer youth programs. The newly-opened Spooly's Health and Fitness Center provides opportunities for residents to get fit, and residents can also bowl a few games at Crete Bowling Lanes. Now in its 34th season, the volunteer Crete Bulldogs Organization enables residents to play a game of spirited football.

Education is a top priority for the village of Crete. Four elementary schools educate younger children from kindergarten through fourth grade. In fifth grade, students attend the Crete-Monee Intermediate Center, then go on to the Crete-Monee Middle School in nearby University Park. High School students attend Crete-Monee High School; nearly 80 percent of graduates go on to college. There are also a number of excellent parochial schools in the area that students can attend.
