Calumet Park Real Estate

Incorporated in 1912 and originally a part of neighboring Blue Island, Calumet Park has grown from a community of just 300 to a village of approximately 8,512 according to 2000 U.S. Census figures. Located 15 miles of downtown Chicago and 12 miles from Midway Airport in Cook County, the village encompasses just 1.1 square miles.

Calumet Park was initially a part of neighboring Blue Island, and was called by other names including Caswell and Burr Oak. It served as a bootlegging and gambling town for Al Capone during Prohibition, and experienced a building boom after World War II as builders constructed a large number of small, brick houses.

Today, Calumet Park has a variety of very affordable housing. For example, in June, 2006, the following single-home properties were listed for sale: On South Carpenter Street, a two-bedroom ranch home with a full basement, eat-in kitchen and a two and one-half garage was selling for $134,900; a three-bedroom, one-bath home on South Sangamon Street was selling for $179,981; and a three-bedroom, two and one-half-bath house was listed for $200,000.

For shopping, residents can visit the totally enclosed, 1,400,000 square-foot River Oaks Shopping Center in nearby Calumet Park. The climate-controlled shopping plaza contains more than 80 stores, including four major department stores, as well as restaurants and a movie theatre. The Calumet Memorial Park District features a fitness center and activities for children and adults, and residents can also golf at the River Oaks Golf Club.

According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, of residents 25 years of age and over, 79.6 percent obtained a high school diploma; 13.4 percent of individuals of the same age received Bachelor's degrees, and 4.2 percent received graduate or professional degrees. Students can attend Calumet Elementary School on Vermont Avenue, Burr Oak Elementary School on 125th Street, and Pace Junior High-St. Isidore on South Wood Street.
