Burbank Real Estate

Fifteen miles southwest of downtown Chicago and 10 minutes away from Midway Airport sits the village of Burbank. It covers 4.2 square miles and has a population of 28,000. Oak Lawn sits to its south, Bridgeview to its west, Bedford Park to its north, and Chicago to its east. Burbank has a population of 28,000.

Once an area of scattered farms, Burbank incorporated in 1970, in order to avoid annexation to the city of Chicago. The village got its name from the local Luther Burbank Elementary School, named after the famous agricultural pioneer. Burbank is proud of its good schools, low taxes and accessible shopping and transportation.

Residents can shop along Harlem Avenue and on Cicero Avenue between 75th and 87th Streets, and for more shopping choices, head on over to the Ford City shopping mall on South Cicero Avenue in Chicago. The village's park district features a wide range of amenities including 12 parks, volleyball and tennis courts, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Prairie Trails Public Library serves the community; it provides popular fiction titles, large print books, books on tape and other offerings to area residents. It also has a summer reading program and a toddler and pre-school storytime program.

Students attend more than one-half dozen public and private elementary and high schools in Burbank, which are known for their academic and sports excellence. There are also two schools for those students with special needs: The Garden Center for the Handicapped and AERO Special Education Cooperative.

In terms of housing, styles include bungalows, Cape Cods, split-levels and ranches. Burbank features predominately single-family homes and a fair amount of new housing construction. The median price of a single-family home is $137,800, according to 2000 U.S. Census figures. Its tax base remains low, making it a good choice for first-time homebuyers.
