Buffalo Grove Real Estate

Located 35 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, the village of Buffalo Grove sits in both Cook and Lake Counties. Its neighbors in Cook County include Arlington Heights and Wheeling; in Lake County, nearby towns include Long Grove, Vernon Hills, Lincolnshire, and Riverwoods. A nationally published book included Buffalo Grove as one of the "Fifty Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family." Indeed, the village's website states, "Buffalo Grove remains a community of tree-lined streets and well-maintained homes, of neighbors and neighborhoods. It provides both the amenities of a country atmosphere and the convenient access to the cultural, entertainment, and business centers of Chicago."

During the early 1900s, Buffalo Grove was a dairy farming community that supplied the Chicago area with fresh dairy products. The actual incorporation of the village, however, did not take place until March 7, 1958. At that time, the community consisted of 42 homes and 164 people. Today, Buffalo Grove has a population of approximately 44,000.

For recreation, residents can visit 400 acres of parks featuring playgrounds, sports fields, fishing, biking, and picnic areas. They can also have fun at the village's yearly Buffalo Grove Days event, featuring a beer garden, parade, fireworks and other attractions. The Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band also attracts residents. Begun in 2001, this group of 70 adult musicians plays all sorts of music including classical, Broadway, jazz and pop music, and perform in surrounding communities. Other Buffalo Grove leisure time activities include the free summer Rotary Village Green Concert Series, and the Buffalo Grove Art Festival, held in July and featuring over 150 artists and craftsmen from across the United States.

Buffalo Grove offers a diverse selection of housing that includes single-family starter homes, upscale residences, apartments and condominiums. According to 2004 village records, the average cost of a single-family home was $383,189.

Buffalo Grove students receive some of the best education in the state. Elementary students are served by four districts: District 21 in Cook County, and Districts 96, 102 and 103 in Lake County. Lower grade students can also attend St. Mary Catholic School.

High school students attend Buffalo Grove High School or Wheeling High School in Cook County, or Stevenson High School in Lake County. These high schools were awarded the Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Education by the U.S. Department of Education.
