Home of the world-famous Brookfield Zoo, the village of Brookfield covers 3.1 square miles and is located 13 miles west of downtown Chicago adjacent to the town of Riverside. Brookfield residents can choose from a wide variety of leisure activities. In addition to visiting Brookfield Zoo, which is open every day of the year, they can get involved in a summer theater workshop, country line dancing, the Book Park Senior Club, Kids First Summer Camp Sport Series, a British soccer camp, nature classes, and a variety of other activities.

The schools in Brookfield are highly rated. In addition to the elementary schools, teens attend Riverside-Brookfield High School in District 208 or Lyons Township High School in District 204. Close to ninety percent of Brookfield residents age 25 and over have graduated from high school; approximately 26 percent have college degrees.

The housing stock in Brookfield is diverse. There are a large number of bungalows that are made from brick, stucco, field stone and other materials. There is also a wide variety of bi-level homes, ranches, Cape Cods, Queen Anne residences, Georgian and even prefab houses from Sears and Montgomery Ward, as well as some larger estates and smaller condos. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the average price of a single-family home was $157,500.
