Antioch Real Estate

Antioch is located in Lake County, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee on Routes 83 and 173, just south of the Wisconsin border. A summer and winter destination for many Chicago residents, the town boasts numerous parks, golf courses and campgrounds. The Chain O' Lakes, an Illinois State Park situated along the Fox River, features abundant fishing, boating and other summertime leisure activities. In the wintertime, skiing and snowmobiling are popular with residents and visitors. Antioch's population is 7,560.

Antioch became a well-known vacation spot for Chicagoans in the late 1880s once the rail line to Chicago was laid in 1886. Hotels and summer cottages were built, and visitors enjoyed the quiet rural life over the hustle and bustle of Chicago. Later on, during Prohibition, Al Capone even owned a summer home on nearby Bluff Lake. Fire destroyed much of Antioch's downtown area at the turn of the century, and in 1905, the town was rebuilt and started its own public water system. A volunteer fire department was formed in 1913.

The village has a variety of employers including financial institutions, car dealerships, retail stores and a large industrial park located adjacent to the Wisconsin Central Railway, north of Highway 173. Its world famous Pickard China Factory produces Air Force One and Camp David china, and the company's museum displays china used by many well-known government officials throughout history. Downtown Antioch has a mixture of small retail antique, quilting and clothing shops, as well as a wide range of ethnic restaurants.

High school students in Antioch attend Antioch Community High School. There are also seven public primary/middle schools in the village, and two private primary/middle schools: St. Peter Elementary School and Faith Evangelical Lutheran School. College-aged students can attend the College of Lake County in nearby Grayslake; Gateway Technical College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, and William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, 26 miles away. According to 2000 U.S. Census figures, approximately ninety percent of the village's high school students graduate high school.

The Antioch Fine Arts Gallery, a not-for-profit institution that is staffed by member volunteers, displays the work of area artists. The village's PM&L Theatre on Main Street has thrived for over 40 years, producing well-attended plays and musicals.

Many single-family homes are available, from Cape Cods to modern ranches to older Victorians. The price of housing varies from starter homes to luxury properties. Recent listings in June, 2006 included an eight-bedroom, five-bath house listing for $1,700,000, and a four-bedroom, two-bath house selling for $289,500.
